What to expect on the installation day

On the installation day for your Internet fixed wireless system (LTE, 5G or satellite), you can expect a professional technician to handle the setup, which typically takes a few hours.

How the process looks like:

1. Site Survey & Mounting

The technician will first identify the best installation location for unobstructed line-of-sight. This determines where the equipment will be placed.

Outdoor Unit: A subscriber module (antenna) will be mounted on your roof or an exterior wall using a standard/custom mount.

Alignment: Technician will use specialized tools to align the antenna for the strongest possible signal.

 

2. Exterior Wiring

Cable Run: A single outdoor-rated cable will be run from the antenna down to the entry point of your home.

Grounding: For safety and to protect against power surges, the technician will install a surge suppressor and ground the system according to local regulations.

Sealing: Any holes drilled for the cable will be sealed with silicone, and "drip loops" will be used to prevent water from following the cable into your house.

 

3. Interior Setup

Point of Entry: A small hole is usually drilled to bring the outdoor cable inside to your preferred room.

Power (PoE): The cable connects to a Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter or indoor unit, which plugs into a standard wall outlet. This provides power to the outdoor antenna through the data cable.

Router Installation: The technician will then connect the Wi-Fi router to the PoE adapter.

 

4. Testing & Handover

Before leaving, the technician will:

Verify Connection: Run speed tests on their laptop to ensure the service meets the expected levels for your plan.

Help with Setup: Assist in getting your primary devices connected to the new Wi-Fi network.

Quick Tips for a Smooth Day:

Access: Ensure the technician has clear access to your roof and the area inside where you want the router placed.

Decision Maker: An adult (18+) must be present to sign off on the equipment location and the final installation.

Furniture: If the ideal entry point is behind a heavy desk or shelf, it helps to have that area cleared beforehand.

Understanding Wi-Fi coverage is essentially about understanding how high-frequency radio waves interact with the physical world. Since these waves have trouble passing through solid objects, "coverage" is less about distance and more about obstacles and interference.

 

Estimating Your Home Coverage

Think of your router as a glowing light bulb. Areas with a direct "line of sight" to the bulb will be the brightest (strongest signal), while areas behind walls or on different floors will be in the "shadows" (weakest signal).

The "Rule of Two Walls": A helpful baseline for estimation is that most standard Wi-Fi signals can pass through two interior drywall walls before the speed and reliability drop significantly.

  • One wall: Minimal impact.

  • Two walls: Noticeable slowdown.

  • Three+ walls: High chance of "dead zones" or frequent disconnections.

 

Frequency Differences

Modern routers use two main "bands," each with different coverage characteristics: 2.4 GHz: Long range and better at penetrating walls, but slower speeds. 5 GHz / 6 GHz: Extremely fast, but very poor at passing through solid objects.

Factors That "Kill" Your Signal

When estimating coverage, look for these specific signal-blockers in your floor plan: Mirrors and Glass: These reflect signals. A large mirror can act like a metal shield, bouncing the signal away from the room behind it. Water: Large aquariums or hydronic (in-floor) heating systems absorb radio waves. Metal: Kitchen appliances, metal studs in walls, tin ducts between levels and radiant barrier insulation in attics are the most significant "dead zone" creators. Interference: Microwaves, garage openers, Christmas lights, baby monitors, and even your neighbor's router can "crowd" the airwaves.

 

How to Improve Your Coverage

Strategic Placement (The "Central & High" Rule)

The most effective way to improve coverage is often free: choose right place for you wireless router. Centrally Located: Place the router in the middle of the house rather than a corner. Elevated: Radio waves travel slightly downward and outward. Placing the router on a high shelf or mounted on a wall provides better distribution than leaving it on the floor. Open Air: Don't hide the router inside a cabinet or behind a TV.
